One day in Chandigarh can take in the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake and the Government Museum and Art Gallery, with a garden visit as an alternative later stop.
Start with the Rock Garden, allow two to three hours there, then make time for the lake before choosing an afternoon visit. Hotel The Tulip offers guest rooms for guests planning a Chandigarh stay.
- First stop: Rock Garden, open daily with seasonal hours.
- Time to allow: Two to three hours at the Rock Garden.
- Next: Sukhna Lake, with free entry and boating among its attractions.
- Afternoon option: Government Museum and Art Gallery, open except Mondays and gazetted holidays.

Start with the Rock Garden
The Rock Garden is a 35-acre art garden at Uttar Marg in Sector 1, made from household waste and industrial items. Beginning here gives you time for its three phases and other attractions before moving on to the lake.
Founder Nek Chand began creating the garden in his spare time in 1957. The site includes a waterfall, aquariums, an open-air theatre, a dolls museum, a food court and a souvenir shop. Chandigarh Tourism estimates that a visit takes two to three hours.
Opening hours vary by season: it is open daily from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM from 1 April to 30 September, and from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM from 1 October to 31 March. Admission is Rs. 30 for adults and Rs. 10 for children. Check the official site before you go, as hours and prices can change.

Continue to Sukhna Lake
Sukhna Lake is a rain-fed lake created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe stream. Chandigarh Tourism describes it as covering 3 square kilometres, with boating and several other attractions around the water.
Entry is free, and the lake is open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM. You can find boating, portrait-making, children’s rides and eateries, as well as the Garden of Silence, the Sukhna Interpretation Centre and Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary. If boating is part of your plan, check the current arrangements before you go.

Choose a museum or garden for the later day
Use the later part of the day for the Government Museum and Art Gallery, or choose a garden visit if you would rather stay outdoors. The museum is in Sector 10-C and is open from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, except Mondays and gazetted holidays.
Admission is Rs. 30, with free entry for children below 18 years; the camera fee is Rs. 30. A wheelchair is available on request for visitors with physical disabilities.
Local buses 2, 34, 212, 8, 123, 23A, 123A, 76 and 251 from the Sector 17 bus stand drop passengers at Rose Garden, across the road from the museum. You can also travel from that bus stand by cycle rickshaw or local bus.
If you prefer to spend the afternoon outside, the Japanese Garden is another Chandigarh landmark. Check local guidance before planning it as a timed stop.

Before you go
Keep the Rock Garden’s two-to-three-hour suggested visit in mind when setting the day’s pace, and account for the museum’s Monday and gazetted-holiday closure when choosing your afternoon stop.
Keep the schedule flexible between stops, since travel times between the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, the Capitol Complex and the museum are not published.
